You Are Not a Number: Breaking the SSN Identity Trap

[HERO] You Are Not a Number: Breaking the SSN Identity Trap

Welcome to the Private Business Circle! 👋

Let’s get straight to the point. We see it every single day in our consultations: people are more confused than they realize because they are hyper-focused on a nine-digit number. If you are waking up every day thinking that you are your Social Security Number (SSN), or if you are spending all your energy trying to “reclaim” some mystical straw man entity, this post is for you.

With Don Kilam, we focus on the truth of the private sector. The truth is simple, but the system makes it complex to keep you in a cycle of liability. It is time to recognize what you are energizing. If you focus on the social, you stay tied to the social. If you focus on your status as a creator and a trustee, you move into a position of power.

THE ENTITY VS. THE CREATOR: WHO IS IN CHARGE?

Let’s break down the logic. Is the SSN an entity? Yes. Can that SSN do anything: open a bank account, sign a lease, or enter a contract: without your physical signature? No.

If the entity requires your “breath of life” (your signature) to act, then by definition, it is not you. It is a tool. It is a vessel. It is an entity that exists in the world of commerce. The confusion starts when you begin to believe that you and the entity are one and the same. When you believe you are the number, you inherit all the liabilities attached to that number.

THE IDENTITY TRAP: STOP CHASING THE STRAW MAN

There is a major trend in the “sovereign” community where everyone is obsessed with “capturing the straw man.” They want to go through a redemption process to find their “lost soul” in the legal system. Here is the reality: you don’t need to find anything. You were never lost; you were just misinformed.

People want to “reclaim” the SSN because they see that the entity has moved around in commerce for years. They think there is a secret pot of gold attached to it that they can just “grab.” But here is the catch: in the current system, if you benefit from the entity, you are liable for the entity.

If you are trying to benefit from a number you didn’t even create, you are essentially borrowing a status. Why fight to own something that is inherently designed for debt and liability? Instead of trying to “capture” an old identity, why not create a new structure that you actually control?

OWN NOTHING, CONTROL EVERYTHING

This is the Don Kilam International mantra. You don’t need to own the SSN to control the cash flow it generates. In fact, owning things in your personal name is a massive liability.

Think about the most successful families in the world. They don’t have $10 million sitting in a personal bank account attached to a Social Security Number. Why? Because for large levels of income, the SSN is detrimental. It’s a tax trap. It’s a liability magnet.

When you move into the mindset of a Trustee, you stop asking “How do I get my SSN to work for me?” and start asking “How do I use my EIN and my Trust to shield my assets?”

The Shift from Ownership to Control:

  • Ownership: You are the beneficiary, you file personal taxes, you are personally liable for every lawsuit or debt.
  • Control: You operate through a Trust. You own nothing, but you control the assets, the cars, the real estate, and the cash flow.

EMPLOYEE VS. ENTREPRENEUR: THE STATUS UPGRADE

Most people are taught from birth to be employees. Public schools and even most private universities are designed to produce high-level W2 workers. They want you to use that SSN to get a “good job.”

But look at the math. If you make more than a certain amount of money through Social Security as you get older, they tax you on it. If you earn too much, you can’t even collect what you put in. It is a poverty-based mentality. It is not designed for generational wealth.

If you want to evolve, you have to move from being an employee (SSN/W2) to being an entrepreneur or a trustee (EIN/Trust). We often tell our clients: go to your company and ask them to 1099 contract your work out to your business entity. Do you have the grit to do that? Most don’t. They prefer the “safety” of the W2, not realizing that the W2 is the most taxed and least protected status you can have.

Look at a company like Uber. They didn’t start a taxi company; they started a leveraging system. They don’t own the cars, and they don’t have traditional employees in the way a cab company does. They control the platform. They control the flow of data and money. That is the mindset of a creator.

WHY AN ENROLLED AGENT MATTERS:
An Enrolled Agent is a person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service. This isn’t just an “accountant.” This is someone who can actually defend you in court if necessary. Having someone with her skill set, passion, and professional standing in your circle is the difference between guessing and knowing.

STOP OPERATING OUT OF IGNORANCE

People often say, “We were never taught this in school.” Of course you weren’t. The people who run the schools are employees. The principals are employees. They are part of the system that requires you to be a “number” so you can be tracked, taxed, and managed.

Generational wealth information traditionally comes from the family. If your family didn’t have it, you have to go find it. You have to invest in the education that turns you from a “subject” into a “trustee.”

If you are an entrepreneur and you feel overwhelmed, disorganized, or like you have no work-life balance, it’s usually because you are still trying to run a business with an “employee” brain. You are trying to do everything through your personal identity instead of letting the structure do the work.

TAKE ACTION NOW

Are you going to keep dealing with the SSN your entire life, or are you going to make it a point to evolve? The social is just a number. It deals with liability. It is up to you to decide when you are done being a “debtor” and ready to become a “creditor.”

You are a creator. Trusteeship is about creating the value that your family needs. It’s about building an asset base that is liquid and protected.

ACT ACCORDINGLY. Stop trying to “reclaim” a number that isn’t yours. Start building a trust that you actually control.
